A Conference on “Who Owns Your Body?”

Thursday & Friday, 6 – 7 April 2017, The University of Hong Kong

Themes:
How does the law govern the ownership of your body? And of its parts, things and information derived from it? What are the fundamental legal principles governing claims to ownership, possession and other rights in the human body? And what are the ethical, legal and social implications of using materials and information derived from the human body in transplantation, clinical and therapeutic applications, and in biomedical research? This 2-day conference aims to explore these fundamental questions from ethical, legal, medical, religious and social perspectives. It will also identify gaps and inconsistencies in current law and practice; discuss the tensions between the imperatives of protecting individual privacy and allowing important clinical and research uses of tissue and data, and suggest how these tensions may be best bridged to mutual benefit.
