Title: Effect of adjunctive probiotic therapy on periodontal pocket microbiomes: A randomized placebo controlled parallel arm study
Periodontitis comprises of a cascade of inflammatory reactions that ultimately cause tissue destruction with the immune/host response against a dysbiotic biofilm being the main culprit in the pathogenesis. It is shown from the current evidence that probiotics have a role in the management of periodontal diseases. Although many studies have been conducted to evaluate the clinical outcomes of probiotics as adjunctive in the non-surgical periodontal treatment, to our best knowledge there are limited data in research with inconsistent results on demonstrating their exact role on the microbiological and immunological shift . A better knowledge of these relationship could lead to improved understanding of the effectiveness of probiotics. Therefore, this randomized controlled clinical trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of probiotics in the management of periodontal disease by exploring the changes in clinical outcomes, microbial and immune-inflammatory biomarkers on the periodontal pocket microbiomes.
