The Companionship of Art II (i) – Exhibition of Artworks by Liu Bing-heng

In this year, Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong will organize a series of exhibitions — “The Companionship of Art II”, displaying artworks by four artists who had a profound friendship with Professor Jao Tsung-i between the 60s and 80s of the 20th century, including Mr. Liu Bing-heng (1915-2003), Mr. Ding Yanyong (1902-1978), Mr. Zhao Shao-ang (1905-1998), and Mr. Wu Hao (1930-2017).

The first exhibition of the series will present Mr. Liu Bing-heng’s art pieces, and one of the exhibits is a collaborative painting with Professor Jao Tsung-i.
Mr. Liu learned from some early-stage painters from the Painting Society of the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, such as Pan Zhizhong, Li Yanshan, and Yao Suruo, etc., and his painting style was highly influenced by them. Liu Yulin, his elder brother, was also a member of the Painting Society. And therefore Liu followed the brush and ink of the Four Masters of the Yuan dynasty as the members did, integrating the essence of the Four Monks of the late Ming period, particularly the brushwork and composition of Monk Shitao.

Liu had become acquainted with Professor Jao in the 50s of the 20th century, and they maintained close contact in the 70s and 80s. He was of the same age as Mr. Yang Shanshen and Huang Miaozi, and the three of them often had get-togethers with Professor Jao to exchange ideas and share experience on art. Even though they modeled themselves after different masters, that didn’t deprive them of the pleasure of discussion.

In this exhibition, most of the artworks are from the collection of Present Guanfu Studio, and the collaborative painting with Professor Jao belongs to the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong.
