Rapid changes to technology make it difficult for lawyers fully to implement and benefit from the many options now available. The cost, however, in not having the basic knowledge and skill set to utilise various electronic tools and legal technology is high. Resistance to change and complacency in outdated practices put strains on the legal system and hinders lawyers from providing expert advice and service to clients, especially in complex litigation. Knowing what is available and understanding what is possible will accelerate a lawyer's ability to innovate and adapt under the pressures of a rapidly changing technology landscape. By way of example, the presentation will introduce the fundamentals, as applied to legal practice, of the Electronic Data Reference Model (EDRM) established by kCura, the software developers of Relativity.

About the Legal Practice Series: The Legal Practice Series will comprise occasional talks, workshops, seminar presentations on various aspects of legal practice. It is intended to provide students with a better idea of the legal skills that barristers and solicitors will need to cope with the demands of practice, especially litigation practice, in the 21st century.

About the presenter: Abigail Cooke is a US qualified attorney, based in Hong Kong as kCura’s head of business development and operations in the Asia-Pacific Region. Abigail started her career with the Civil Division of the US Department of Justice. She then moved into corporate law, working within the pharmaceutical industry, specializing in large-scale corporate transactions, commercial contracts, and compliance. Moreover, Abigail has defined her legal career around the idea that legal processes and the industry in general can be innovative, cost effective, and efficient.
