Abstract: During recent years, the ways we teach and learn have rapidly changed. In this digital learning environment, we are switching from blackboards to tablets, textbooks to e-books and include a variety of audio-visual content into lectures. From a doctrinal copyright perspective, the progress of teaching and learning concepts raises a number of legal issues regarding educational uses of copyright protected works. Within the Sparkling Science research project “From User-Generated-Content to a User-Generated-Copyright” (https://u-g-c.at/en), an interdisciplinary study was carried out in order to determine policy implications for a modern copyright that promotes the creation of educational resources and the use of new technology-driven teaching and learning concepts. This talk will present the findings of the study and aims at discussing its implications with scholars and students of the University of Hong Kong.

About the speaker: Philipp Homar works as a Research Associate at the Department for Business Law and European Integration at the Danube University Krems and at the IT|IP Law Group of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. His primary fields of research are IP and Data Law with an emphasis on copyright and digital media. From 2015 to July 2017, Philipp Homar was Deputy Principal Investigator of the interdisciplinary research project “From User-Generated-Content to a User-Generated-Copyright” (https://u-g-c.at/en), in which legal scholars and social scientists defined relevant prerequisites for a modern, well-balanced copyright system based on a broad social consensus. He is the author of several publications on copyright law and regularly speaking at national and international conferences.
