Fieldwork on Filmwork: Gender and the Production of Narrative
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dr. Sylvia J. Martin, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Sociology,
Faculty of Social Sciences,
The University of Hong Kong

How are women involved in filmmaking? Drawing from my ethnographic study of media professionals in Hollywood and Hong Kong, I discuss some of the hidden labor and contributions of women in the narrative filmmaking process. By analyzing the transnational issue of job precarity in local contexts of gendered labor experiences, scholars, students, and practitioners can better understand the challenges and possibilities that female media professionals face in these predominantly male-led entertainment industries. The talk concludes with reflections about fieldwork on film work.
