Finding Ways to Overcome the Performance Barriers of Sequential Switching between Exploration and Exploitation
Dr. Jingoo Kang

Sequential switching refers to alternating between periods of exploration and exploitation over time. In this study, we examine performance implications of sequential switching and their boundary conditions. We find that, on average, sequential switching has a negative effect on firm performance. However, performance effects can turn positive if firms are more experienced in sequential switching or deal with low levels of organizational complexity. Our findings indicate that despite significant challenges of sequential switching for most firms, firms with certain capabilities and characteristics may still achieve improved performance from sequential switching.
