In this lecture, I draw on social cultural perspectives of language use to outline language planning and its implications on the foreign language teaching reform in China. The arguments in the lecture are presented in terms of the changes in language planning and use, covering the following issues: (a) the problems in language use and translation in Chinese context; (b) the changes and development in language planning and education; (c) the triggers to foreign language teaching reform in China. In the lecture, I will discuss the above issues from social cultural perspectives to stimulate reflection on the inadequacies of present language planning and education and identify some ‘hot’ issues for further research.
