Seeking world-class university (WCU) status has become a global phenomenon. In spite of many social, cultural, political and economic differences, governments and top universities in both developed and developing countries have joined the battle for academic excellence, as indicated by a range of development strategies and excellence initiatives. In this presentation, the concept of WCU will be introduced, the performance of top universities in One-Belt-One-Road (OBOR) countries and their trends in global rankings will be explored, excellence initiatives in OBOR countries and their impact will be discussed, and excellence initiatives in Mainland China will be presented.
