Event Details

Though discussions of genre teaching are plentiful in the current literature (See, e.g., Bawarshi & Reiff, 2010; Hyland, 2016 & Johns, 2015), there is still concern about how texts from a genre can be appropriately exploited for classroom use and transfer to academic and professional contexts. Influenced by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Rhetorical Genre Studies (RGS) approaches, this workshop is designed to assist teachers to enhance students’ rhetorical flexibility, that is, their openness to the variety of texts possible within or beyond a genre, as students consider the “family resemblances” and variations among texts. First, the term, “genre” as defined in ESP and RGS will be presented. Then, using two exemplars from the same genre produced by different authors for different contexts, participants will practice rhetorical flexibility enhancement and preparation for writing through the following:
• Comparison/contrast of the two genre exemplars for both their repeated features (conventions/”family resemblances”) and their differences.
• Continuing discussion of textual, intertextual and extra-textual features of the exemplars.
• Analysis of a prompt requiring synthesis.
• Text charting to reveal structures and topics at the macro- and micro-levels.
• Scaffolding towards the synthesis as outlined in the prompt.
• Exploration of the approaches used and their applications to various reading-into-writing contexts.
