Event Details

After decades of military rule, Myanmar is experiencing an unprecedented array of fundamental political, economic and social changes. Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory in the November 2015 general election. The skyrocketing popularity of smartphones is altering the social and economic fabric of the nation. Despite Myanmar’s swift, yet incomplete, transition from dictatorship to democracy, there remain many ethnic and religious tensions within the society.
The next President of Myanmar will lead the new Myanmar Government from 1 April 2016. In this forum, Prof. Holliday, whose research focuses on Myanmar politics and governance, and his students will help us learn more about the nation as its new government settles into office.
