These Science Talks are exclusively offered to Academy members with the supports from Faculty of Science, HKU.
Below please find the brief information of the programme:
Date: March 12, 2016 (Saturday)
Time: 3:00pm – 5:30pm
Venue: HKU Campus (exact location is to be confirmed)
Target: S4 & S5 students
Medium of instruction: English
Fee: Free of charge
Session 1: “Predictability and Chaos”
Speaker: Dr Tim Wotherspoon
Time: 3:00pm to 4:15pm
Level: S.4 - S.6
HKDSE Related Subject(s): Physics and Mathematics
Does the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in Beijing cause a typhoon in Hong Kong? Although it has deep and rich consequences, the mathematics of chaos is delightfully simple. Remarkably simple definite rules can create unpredictable dynamics. Order and disorder can coexist in the same system. Small uncertainties can grow until anything is possible. Topics and examples may include sensitivity to initial conditions, non-periodic orbits, and strange attractors.
Session 2: “Benny and the Chocolate Factory”
Speaker: Dr Benny Ng
Time: 4:15pm to 5:30pm
Level: S.4 - S.6
HKDSE Related Subject(s): Chemistry
This talk will use chocolate as an example to arouse students’ general interest in basic science. After the talk, students will learn the three phases of matter, identify and predict the physical state(s) of matter using the phase diagram, and understand and appreciate science in everyday life.
