A personal overview of Hong Kong during the past fifty years, by someone whose life and times strongly reflect his transplanted characteristics. Asian by value albeit Western by accident of birth. Anecdotal in the main, giving insights into the growth of Infrastructure that stands today as one of the Territories fundamental achievements. How this success might be further taken forward, by those who would include many from the University of Hong Kong, will be suggested towards the end of the presentation.
About the speaker:
James Blake, currently Chief Officer Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, previously Chief Executive Officer. Senior Director from 1997 responsible for the Corporation’s HKD70 billion expansion programme of railway and stations in tunnel, on viaduct and at grade.
Secretary for Works, Hong Kong Government from 1991, overall coordination of the HKD165 billion new Airport Core Programme including road, bridge and railway. Also the Public Works Infrastructure Programme including the harbour extension of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and North District Hospital.
Executive Engineering Manager from 1972 for a major Hong Kong Contractor, including railway projects in Hong Kong/Singapore, and the Eastern Cross Harbour submerged tube road/rail tunnel. Resident Engineer for Government approach works to the Central Cross Harbour Road submerged tube road tunnel.
President, Hong Kong Institution of Engineers 1991. President, Federation of Engineering Institutions of South East Asia Pacific 1998, Chairman, the Hong Kong Club 2005. UK Institution of Civil Engineers Gold Medal in 1997. Vice President, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.
